BATT wins fight for Bundy Seniors

State Member for Bundaberg David Batt has had a win for Bundaberg seniors after putting pressure on the Government for almost 6 months.

In 2018, the Labor Government announced the seniors legal and support service would be expanding to Gladstone, Rockhampton, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Mackay, excluding Bundaberg.
Bundaberg’s senior’s population is higher than all above areas and 9% higher than the state’s average.

Concerned that the closest seniors support service is located in Hervey Bay, Mr Batt asked the Minister a Question on Notice in October to find out why Bundaberg was excluded from the expansion. The response provided no clarity, urging Mr Batt to ask a second question in the first sitting week of 2019, with a response due Thursday, March 14.

“It’s fantastic to see the Government has listened to my concerns for Bundaberg senior’s and has announced that we will have our own seniors legal and support service here in Bundaberg,” Mr Batt said.

“Our senior’s population is 30%, that is a huge percentage of our community and until now, our older people simply didn’t have access to legal support and were required to travel elsewhere to seek help.

“The service allows those who are experiencing, or at risk of elder abuse to access individualised support, referral, counselling and mediation services.

“Ensuring everybody in our community has the facilities and support they need is incredibly important and I am thrilled I was able to make this happen for our many seniors who call Bundy home.”
