David Batt MP has today expressed additional concerns about the impact of the lowering of Paradise Dam’s spillway by 5 metres.
The worry comes as Minister Lynham provides a response to a recent Question on Notice asked by Mr Batt.
The question asked: Will the Minister advise if any additional flood modelling has been completed to confirm that the five metre reduction in the spillway of Paradise Dam will not have a more severe impact on Bundaberg homes, businesses and local infrastructure in a future flood event?
“I have real concerns that the lowering of the spillway will negate the flood modelling carried out by Bundaberg Regional Council following the 2013 flood event,” Mr Batt said.
“In his response, Minister Lynham indicates that flood modelling undertaken by SunWater suggests that lowering the spillway by five metres will ‘not appreciably’ change downstream flooding during rare weather events.
“This indicates that it will change – what will this change mean for the Bundaberg community?
“How will the change impact on our businesses and residents if Bundaberg experiences another flood event similar to 2013?
“The community needs to know and the State Government needs to release Sunwater’s flood modelling immediately.
“This is the last in a long line of unanswered questions.
“I hear daily from my constituents about their concerns with what is happening with Paradise Dam – they feel they are being kept in the dark and the Palaszczuk Labor government is not taking their concerns seriously.
“Labor continues to delay the release of relevant information and continues to drag it’s feet on real flood mitigation measures for our city.
“Our community deserves to know what the future of flood mitigation looks like for Bundaberg.
“I again call on Minister Lynham to do the right thing and release this information now.”
