“A new hospital for Bundaberg has always been my number one priority,” Mr Batt said.
“Where the preferred hospital site would be has been the question on everyone’s lips for the last 12 months, so I welcome today’s announcement.
“It’s good to see plans for a new hospital progressing but I am concerned about the site the government has chosen.
“The Premier said this site off Kay McDuff Drive is the ‘best’ site out of more than 40 that were put forward, but I cannot agree.
“This site is in an industrial precinct heavily frequented by B double trucks, right on the edge of town with the airport on one side and a gun club and bus depot on the other.
“This site may be the ‘best’ state government owned option, but it’s certainly not the best location in Bundaberg.
“Our current hospital has served our region for more than 100 years and the new hospital will do the same, so we need to get its location right from the beginning.
“I will be reaching out to our community to seek their views on this hospital site and will be very interested to hear everyone’s thoughts.
“A new Bundaberg hospital will benefit our entire region, from patient care to the local economy.
“It will give our hard-working health care staff the modern, well-organised work environment they deserve, as well as entice other health professionals to move to our region.
“With more treatment options available locally, patients will have the opportunity to access necessary healthcare right here at home with the support of friends and family.
“I will continue to call on the Queensland Government to ensure community consultation occurs and the voices of local residents are heard.”
